2012 CLEVELAND CHALLENGE CUP OF BOCCE RE-CAP

Wickliffe, Ohio…The road to becoming a champion sometimes takes many twists and turns.  This year's tournament was no exception, as some familiar names worked their way through the 96-team "meatgrinder" to fight for survival.  There is no doubt that the level of competition has been on the rise over the last 3-4 years, as younger, athletic players have started to embrace the sport.  Still, there is something to be said for the older, experienced players who have won in the past.  That seemed to be the theme at this year's Cleveland Challenge Cup of Bocce:  the tug of war between the newer, tournament teams and the older, experienced teams.

Men and women clad in team colors stared down a dusty alley, eyed up the other team's bocce balls from every angle and then shot their bocce down the track trying to get the best shot next to the pallino, the small white sphere at the other end of the bocce course.

For the 29th year the Italian-American Club of Wickliffe hosted the annual Cleveland Challenge Cup of Bocce sponsored by Pat O'Brien Chevrolet. The tournament welcomed 96 men's teams and 16 women's teams from across the United States and Canada.

Wickliffe Italian-American Club wins 2012 World Series of Bocce

Champions: Brian Polantz, Gino Marulli, Pete Russo, Marco CignaraleROME — The Wickliffe Italian-American Club took first place in the open division of the 2012 World Series of Bocce, which concluded Sunday at the Toccolana Club in Rome.

The Wickliffe, Ohio-based came in first out of 78 teams to win the title.

The runner-ups also hailed from Ohio. Vandra Brothers, from Cleveland, finished second in the open divison.

Ontario’s Neeltran came in third, followed by Phil’s Hair Styling from Somers Point, N.J. Rome teams Mellace’s Legal Eagles and Budwiser tied for fifth.

Rome teams swept the top three spots in the ladies division. Liquor Express took the crown, followed by Franklin Hotel and Uvanni Motors. Utica’s Nicholas Jewlers came in fourth and Mellace’s Lady Angels and Country Kitchen, both from Rome, tied for fifth.
